Charlize Theron by justinsdrawings Charlize Theron by justinsdrawings
My first dA submission!

I've been struggling and procrastinating forever trying to get all the pieces together for my gallery. I kept seeing all these recent Charlize Theron drawings and decided the portrait contest featuring her would be a good inspiration/excuse to do a quick, loose pen portrait I've been itching for (I usually work with charcoals).

The finished result being something I could throw up on here to get my gallery started. I got about halfway through only to realize it was a "pencil art" contest. Ah, well.

8.5" x 11" inkjet paper. Bic Ultra and Sharpie pens with General's white charcoal pencil. September 2008.

In a few weeks, this piece will be two years old. How do you feel about in now compared to how you perceived it in 2008? Just curious. :)

I'd hadn't even realized it was coming up on two years. Thanks so much for your interest in my work!

I look at this one again and envy how comparatively loose and impressionistic I was back then compared to the nearly insane attention to detail I do now. But I also see some artifacts I would've caught and cleaned up now (there's a vertical line on her chin that looks terrible!).

It's a good example of your range, I think. The eyes are incredible.

Aah, miss good pen portraits. I've not done anything in pen for so long. I kinda feel like I might have to do something in pen after seeing this. Really good work.

Yeah, I like to do a pen portrait every now and then just to loosen up when I'm getting too precious with my pencil drawings because it's so much more impressionistic and final.

Thanks for commenting.

You did this with Sharpies!!! Amazing! How did you do the grey shading?!

The shading's done by scribbling lines with a Bic ballpoint pen (and rubbing some white charcoal over top in places I made too dark).

Thanks very much for looking, commenting, and complimenting!

Thanks!

I made plenty of mistakes too, but white charcoal covers Sharpie almost like an eraser. I couldn't believe it. Pen not so much.

Thanks. I always pay special attention to the eyes and usually start to get bored with the drawing after they're done. :D

Yeah, it's kind of scary at first but you soon realize that you have to do a lot of pen marking before it's completely irrreversible or ruined.

Thanks to everyone for their kind comments and encouragement so far!
