Ray Lewis by justinsdrawings Ray Lewis by justinsdrawings
Baltimore Ravens linebacker.

Christmas present for my brother, who's probably the world's second most passionate Ravens fan after Ray himself.

First off, AWESOME art! Excellent picture, and great contrast. It really looks like you can see his breath on this cold day. The grey and white background provides a good depth of field, and the texture in his skin is phenomenal. I only have a couple small suggestions to give this piece more impact. Make that dimple line that goes from the right edge of the nostril to the right edge of his mouth a little darker or more defined. That will make his expression look a little more intense. Also, adding a tiny bit of shine to his eye will help boost the intensity and give the piece more impact all around.
Overall, awesome art, and I still can't get over how well done that skin texture is. Awesome work!

Him and Brian Urlacher inspired me to play football as Linebacker. Well done, sir.

Very cool. He's still one of the best defenders in the game after 17 years. Thanks for your compliment and fave.

I have no idea who this is but I think it's fantastic. My ambition is to draw as good as you. I've been using charcoal pencils since you recommended them.

Hah, thanks very much. That's an even better compliment if you don't know who he is.

I hope the charcoal pencils help you to improve as much as they did for me!

Amazing work, it really achieves an old photo effect I think- at first I thought it actually was a photo. You work with black and white so well, no crazy messy smudging(like I tend to do), looks great! ;)

Thanks so much! I always say that's the best compliment.

And it's kind of a pain for me not to get messy and smudge too. I even have to be careful which direction I blow off the charcoal dust. :D

You're very welcome. ^-^

I know what you mean, one time I blew off some charcoal and it created a permanent unwanted spray effect :faint: like sprayed dust.

Great drawing, really like the strong contrast! Well done. But how did you get the soft tones in between? Or was it the scanning/photo process that made it look like that?

:iconjustinsdrawings:
justinsdrawings Featured By Owner Dec 28, 2009
Thanks very much. I appreciate the compliment.

The soft tones were done with a lot of mechanical pencil rubbing and also some white charcoal over black.

Haha, it's just lots and lots of rubbing until the mechanical lines blend together.

Thanks again!

Thanks a lot, my friend. I appreciate the comment.

Funny you should mention the cropping because the reference photo was a huge widescreen shot of his entire head and the field. The hardest part was deciding what piece to draw.
