George by justinsdrawings George by justinsdrawings
George! My lovable, trouble-making Boxer. Full view is just a hair bigger than he is.

The final part of my family dog portrait trilogy, which also includes Duncan and Charlie.

This was the toughest, most time-consuming drawing I've ever done...and I knew it would be. That kind of subtle, gray shading is my worst nightmare. I ended up scratching and rubbing however I could, determined to get it right.

I put everything I had into this one and I'm glad to finally have a finished portrait of my buddy. Don't know if this is my best drawing, but it's definitely the one I'm most proud of.

You can see an animation of the drawing stages here:

By George I think you have it!

In all seriousness... I had to think A LOT to figure out which one of yours to Critique and I HAD to settle on this one.

You did a downright amazing job capturing the dog in every single little detail. This looks like a Photoshopped picture... that's how friggin' good it is! You have excellent skills and considering you even got down into drawing the individual lines on the tongue as well as dozens of wayward hairs it's a wonder you aren't doing this professionaly! I only wish I had half the talent you do!

Incredible job!

Alright. To start off with, I have to say that, when I first glanced at the thumbnail, I thought it was a photo. I was getting ready to critique a photograph and was stunned when I pulled up the full-view to get a closer look. My God, stunning.

I think the most talent-requiring portions of this drawing are the tongue and the eyes. The tongue has the texture of a true dog tongue. It looks so realistic with all the wrinkles and shadows. The eyes... Well, the lighting makes it all. It looks as though there is truly light shining into the eyes of the dog.

The expression on the dog even shows its personality. I've definitely never met your dog, but I feel like I know more about it by looking at this drawing. Well done.

I only see one place for improvement and that is on the dog's chin, at the tip of the muzzle. The shading looses consistency for a small length of space. It seems artificial. Not a big deal, but I noticed it as I was looking for ways to help you improve.

All else I saw was superb. Truly well done.

Thanks very much!

I use charcoal and mechanical pencils. The size is just regular inkjet paper (I'd recommend working larger because it improves your skills and looks better hanging on the wall).

do you use a light board or graphing for proportions?

:iconjustinsdrawings:
justinsdrawings Featured By Owner Feb 19, 2014
I use a relative measurement technique for proportions. I'll draw an eye and then mark it's length/width and compare it against other features on the reference photo. The forehead is equal to two eye lengths, or the fullness of lips are the same width as an iris, etc.

The other methods you mention work just as well, though.

Holy crap dude this is friggin awesome, oh and yes michevous. Are they what, boxers have the most personality of any dog I have ever met and the energy to come with it. My guy got out once and came back covered in yellow paint. God knows what he was doing. Some painter out there screamin' bloody dog!!
Oh man I want those silky skills to get the light reflection so glossy and awesome. amazing drawing and a beautiful dog too! Love it 5 stars!!!

Thanks a lot! It's still my favorite drawing I've ever done.

Boxers have more personality than a lot of people I know. I always say it's a good thing they can't talk because they'd probably never shut up! I never went running once before I got him...and now it's every night for the last 6 years.

Hilarious story about the yellow paint, btw.
